The public and private school systems of South Korea place a premium on native English speakers in their classrooms. It is unnecessary to speak Korean to teach there, but a year long commitment is the standard. For many recent college graduates who have accrued student loan debt and want to see the world, teaching ESL has become and attractive offer. Most of the information in this article has been gleaned from research of Teaching English as a Second Language websites such as Dave's ESL Cafe where teachers currently living and working in South Korea share information on message boards. The rest is derived from correspondence with a recruiting agency called Global Campus.
Finding a Recruiter
Companies based in the U.S. and Canada advertise all over the internet. A simple Google search for "Teach English in South Korea" will yield many results. This is by far the better way to go than just buying a ticket and looking for work. Recruiting agencies have streamlined contact with South Korean schools and are able to securely find positions. They can also give good advice towards completing a visa application and arranging the necessary documents before arrival.
Teaching Public vs. Private Schools
The public school system in Korea offers the best bet for a newly arrived English teacher. It is managed by the government and therefore set to certain required standards. This means that pay will be on time, teaching hours set fairly, and housing will be provided. Internet ESL message boards are rife with horror stories of teaching in Korean private schools, or Hagwons. Complaints range from being underpaid, to long work hours, and less than comfortable living conditions.
